Why is citric acid used in haircare?

Citric Acid is used, from my understanding, mostly to adjust the pH downward.  For haircare conditioners the lower the pH (like 4.5) -- along with the use of cationic emulsifiers -- the better the conditioner can be. Here's a short list of info I've compiled from my K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) notes on Citric Acid:

  • Used to regulate PH and for its preservation properties.
  • IS NOT A BROAD SPECTRUM PRESERVATIVE.
Use a real preservative and use citric acid to help keep the ph low
  • Could break the gel matrix if you add it to the final gel made with carbomer or sodium carbomer

(MORE info about citric acid can be found here for Paid Memberships)
