I've been testing my new anhydrous (without water) butter whip for a few days and I like it! Thanks to the Cupuacu butter and Behenyl alcohol, its creaminess almost resembles a water-based emulsion.
It not only has Coconut oil (Tropical Traditions Organic! luv it!), but also Shea butter, Cupuacu butter, Cocoa butter and Camellia oil which has been infused with the herb called 'Cleavers' along with Rosehips.
If you're looking to naturally tint your DIY lotions, creams and soaps, try the following natural products which will add anything from a hint of color to a full out color change.
After using Tropical Traditions brand of Virgin Coconut Oil I finally understand why so many people praise it so highly. As I told you in my preliminary review, no straight liquid oil I've used thus far has made my skin as soft as when I use this brand of coconut Oil.
As you guys know, I make most of my own stuff: lotions, shea butter whips, hair conditioners/leave in conditioners, deep conditioning treatments, etc.
So although I do use certain off-the-shelf products, I'm always looking for ways of making my own concoctions and not getting bogged down in that whole product junkie world like I used to be.
My attitude is that if something doesn't work, I don't give a damn how expensive it is, I ain't using it anymore.
I took a little of this Tropical Traditions Coconut oil and put some on my super dry hands and was shocked. They were smoother and softer than with other brands of coconut oil.
I saw this photo and for whatever reason reality became just a bit clearer. Because of this unashamed rediscovery of our natural hair, there will be at least a generation of web savvy black girls who will grow up never, ever thinking that there is something wrong with their natural hair.
Oh yes, its about that time for a product giveaway yall! Do you like coconut oil for your hair, skin or to cook with? If you're selected in this giveaway, Tropical Traditions will send you a FREE 32 ounce jar of their highly coveted Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, chi'le! Woot!
Some of you may have already read my Not All Coconut Oils Are Created Equal post before. So you know I've been on the hunt for a great quality coconut oil for use on skin and hair, and to be part of my DIY concoctions.
Looks like I've found a winner. For real. I plan to have a much more detailed review of Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil in the near future as I like to use even the great products for more than a week to do a full review. (Yall know that I don't just hype any ole thing).
But why should YOU wait until then?
I've been on the hunt for a great brand of coconut oil in recent months. I've used the Nutiva, Barleans Organic, Swanson brand, and Garden of Life Coconut oils.
I was more impressed with certain ones and disappointed in others. Some had a good coconut smell while with others you could barely smell the coconut. Honestly, not all coconut oils are created equal. You'd think they were, right? But no.
Is your hair unimportant to you? Solange recently became a target of people who didn't like her less than perfect natural hair. But she says her hair isn't all that important to her.
She is quoted as saying, "My hair is not very important to me…so I don't encourage it to be important to you.” (http://tinyurl.com/7t9lu86)
Quite honestly, my hair is very important to me. However, what I don't care about are other people's opinions. For example, like how some people complain about natural hair not being "professional" (read: "straight" or "done").
In another post, Shania4NJ wrote: "I use aritha powder in my ayurvedic hair treatments once a month".
Ayurvedic treatments for both hair and skin have gained popularity in recent years, especially with the natural community.
For example, I've used Amla powder and Kalpi Tone powder for my hair before. I did notice an increased softness and blacker hair. But because of the nature of how you have to use it (as a paste), I didn't use them often enough to tell a significant difference.
Soapnuts: 100% natural "shampoo", cleaner, laundry cleaner, etc. I have to try these. Has anyone used soapnuts (aritha) foam to wash their natural hair? It is completely natural... and I mean completely. There is no lye involved in the creation process of this natural cleaner. There are even some companies which incorporate soapnuts into their hard bar (lye) recipes.
Check out this youtube vid demonstrating how to process the real soap nut into a frothy, foamy hair wash.
I made an Agave based hair gel today. I will try to tomorrow and see if I like the recipe. I'll let you know. :P
BTW, this is what I used:
An at-a-glance look at ECOMulse. It's an ECOCERT approved self-emulsifier which will add great conditioning properties to your homemade concoctions!
I'm working on some short, 'at a glance' type of videos which will give you the shorthand version of some of the best ingredients to use, in addition to your oils, butters and liquids, which will help you make great lotions, creams and conditioners!
Great tips from naptural85 about growing long and healthy hair

One of Naptural85's tips is to moisturize. In addition, I would suggest you use ingredients or products you can trust. If your hair does best with Extra virgin Olive Oil, don't go broke trying to buy Jojoba oil or Cupuacu Butter which may or may not satisfy your needs.
I made a hibiscus/castile shampoo yesterday and I had some hibiscus infusion (tea) left over. With it, I decided to create a detangler using the hibisucs as a base.
Hibiscus is an astringent tea which I normally use as part of a spritzer (along with glycerin) to retwist my hair between washings.
Like I said in an earlier post, I love the dark red color of hibiscus. It makes a great natural colorant for lotions, creams and conditioners. It also helps to make the hair naturally shiny.
Anyway, here is a super simple recipe I used. Feel free to tweak it, add what you want or substitute your fav tea:
I feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when I create something that works well on my hair without all the parabens, mineral oil and other crap. So, I almost hate it when a commercial product works incredibly well on my natural hair.
Right now, I am so hatin' on Lustrasilk Curl Max Curl Activator Moisturizer
One place to Buy it: Walgreens

My curls have taken a liking to this stuff just from a couple of test applications. I'm talking about the one with the super soft, brownish gel like consistency, not the "Extra Light" white creamy one.
